Reddit Marketplace hints at huge onboarding bullrun

Reddit recently tweeted a live animated ad in relation to the Reddit Avatars x NFL collaboration for the Super Bowl.

The question arises as to why Reddit would spend money on a collab and advertise a free collectible avatar? Great way to onboard a bunch of new people to Reddit? Trying to get the army of lurkers to finally create an account? Or they are trying to onboard as many people in their hype train release of their new Reddit Marketplace.

Collectibles are a freaking huge global market and sports fans have been known to keep the magic alive via baseball, basketball, etc, limited edition cards. Pokémon was a huge phenomenon worldwide when the cards came out. It spurred a whole generation of collectors. What actually made it fun? It was the collecting and showing off of your collection.

BrokenSea (OpenSea) is right now the largest secondary market for Reddit Avatars. Recently, Reddit updated their store and posted a thread asking users what features should avatars be sorted by; price, artist, etc. They will also add a feature to share a listing. So many questions. Gen 2 favourites sold out in 3 minutes, the rest within 15 mins of release. Who the fuck will be sharing listings with friends? People smash the buy buttons like a fish feeding frenzy. This leads to more proof Reddit Marketplace is creating a P2P trading and market for avatars.

Currently, the store has a drop down that sorts the collection you are viewing. The only option in the drop down is “Buy Now”. Why create a drop down with a single option? They are going to add to this, likely it may be similar to eBay with auction, trade, buy now, etc.

What will this mean for avatars? Huge onboarding of users who don’t use OpenSea. Owning an avatar will be prestigious. The Super Bowl mint is 2m. We have collections with 150 - 1000. The moment the wider Reddit community realises you can buy, hold, and sell avatars for profits, all within the Reddit app, it will spark a huge speculative bull run.
