Are contracts executions meant to be cheap?

Hello! I'm interested in ETH for some time already and I was wondering about the price of gas. From what I see and understand about this environment so far, each transfer, exchange etc. is just some contract call in the background that costs gas. For example, simple ETH transfer costs around 20$ rn, where some exchange gas fees are even as high as 150$.

My question here is: Is this a normal situation or are there some plans that will lower the cost somehow? As an example: I wanted to develop some dapp and was wondering whether each contract call that will this dapp make, will cost me such amounts of money? In this scenario, it appears to be quite prohibitive when it comes to making such app relatively popular. Every user would need to spend hunderds of dollars in order to use this dapp daily. Or am I messing up some concepts?
I will be very grateful for some clarification here.
