Choosing the Best Hardware Wallet: Keeping My Investment Safe and Secure

I have been thinking about buying a new hardware wallet for a couple of weeks. Currently, I have a Trezor T, which I am pretty happy with but I have been researching other options to just have another one. Therefore, I have decided to share with you the information that I have collected for my own DYOR, so that you have to do less work. I hope this information is useful for you.

What is a hardware wallet?

A Hardware wallet is a physical device that stores private keys and it is used to securely store and manage cryptocurrencies. It is one of the safest ways for protecting your crypto because it allows users to keep their private keys offline.

Protect your investment and self custody

Trezor Hardware Wallet

Trezor Model T is the latest developed by Satoshi Labs. The Model T differs from other wallets in features like a touchscreen interface. They also have a cheaper version Trezor Model One that supports less coins and it doesn't have a touch screen, it works with two buttons.

Pros: Allows conversion to fiat currency and supports many cryptocurrencies. The wallet app exchanges have many functionalities including atomic swap and fiat exchange.

Cons: Expensive, Model T is just an interface upgrade from Model One and it is 3 times more expensive. Only can be connected by USB.

Model Price
T $69
One $219

Ledger Hardware Wallet

The Ledger Nano X is another good and secure HW that looks like a USB with a steel shell. The device can be connected to any mobile device or computer by USB or Bluetooth.

Bluetooth connectivity and mobile support are the biggest upgrades that the Ledger Nano X has over the Ledger Nano S. It also supports a lot of cryptocurrencies and it is considered the most popular HW thanks to Ledger's marketing campaign.

They have three different versions, the new Stax, Nano X and Nano S plus.

Pros: Allows you to store many different cryptocurrencies. It has a big community supporting it with software integration and include many new decentralized exchanges.

Cons: Setting up or rebooting your wallet takes a decent amount of time. Mobile support is cool but needs more improvement because Bluetooth functionality is not smooth. Many software updates affect user experience adding lag and wallets that are not always immediately compatible. Bluetooth is cool but ads another way of attack for hackers.

Model Price
Stax €279 (aprox. $297.14)
Nano X €149 (aprox. $158.69)
Nano S Plus €79 (aprox. $84.14)

NGRAVE

I have never heard about this one but I read that it is a pretty good. The company was incubated by one of the top leading security research firms in the world, imec. The device doesn’t allow you to connect to the internet in any way. Rather than using a USB port or Bluetooth, NGRAVE Zero uses one-way QR code communication to relay information to connected devices while staying offline. All of this means that you will never have to worry about compromised software. They also sell metal plates to protect your seed phrase from fire and water.

Pros: It has a 'cold' design which means it can not be compromised digitally and that you never have to worry if your hardware wallet’s software is okay. Includes stainless sheets to simplify the proper storage of your seed phrase.

Cons: This is a new company with its first major product. With IMEC behind them, you can expect great security but community support is still new.

Model Price
Combo Pack (Zero + Graphene) €498 (aprox. $530.39)
Zero €398 (aprox. $423.89)
Extra lower plate for your graphene €28 (aprox. $29.82)

Other HWs

After doing some research, these are the three that I am considering purchasing. However, there are other options such as BitBox02, SecuX STONE, KeepKey, Keevo, among others, which are also quite interesting.

Conclusion

I think that ultimately, it all comes down to finding a wallet that fits your budget and supports all the cryptocurrencies you currently have or plan to purchase in the future.

In my case, I am considering buying a Ledger since I already own a Trezor T. The decision I need to make is whether to purchase a Stax or a Nano X.
