HNT miners in remote locations is about to make no rewards

My last post which covered how to setup a HNT miner, I forgot a major thing and I didn't want anyone to get one that will run in this situation. Based on this, after May 11 some miners will make no rewards https://blog.helium.com/light-hotspots-explained-everything-you-need-to-know-f86612f571c6

In short, if you are in a place where you don't have any HNT miners to see yours. Then the only way it will be able to get rewards is by IOT devices on the network using the miner. The problem with this is, virtually no where does that right now and it's up in the air if this will ever be a thing.

So what should you do if you were thinking about getting a miner? IMO the best thing to do is go to the following link https://explorer.helium.com/hotspots and look to see if there is hotspots near yours. Click on them and look at them. I picked a random one for this example

Note how it is offline and even if it was it has no witness. I wouldn't count this as an active hotspot unless there was nothing around it truly.

Like I seen a ton of active hotspots that are setup from the looks of it on the site. But it has 0 witnesses even with other hotspots nearby. This is telling me the placement of the hotspot itself might be blocked, hardware is broke, or something else. You can't control what others do, so if they are near others then they are worthless and I wouldn't count on them.

And something to note, even if no one is around, again they could have a hardware problem, they could take theirs down for whatever reason, they might not have the hardware setup in the right spot, etc. So you are taking a risk if you don't have any other hotspots nearby.

Now if you have one already, IMO it is worth keeping it up because it is passive and doesn't cost hardly anything to keep it up. Like if you can sell the hardware, then maybe. But if you can't/don't want to. Then there is no reason to not keep it up IMO. Best case, they will roll back this or fix it since I can see this killing any chance someone has to putting it up in a remote place with no other spots. Or maybe someone else nearby gets one. At worse, you basically did nothing and might of lost a few cents per year on your electric bill. (NOTE: You need to wait after the update to see how much the electric will cost. Read the article and you will find much of the use is transferring to validators. So it is likely the electric cost will dramatically drop.)

Anyways, I hope this helps.

Who here has one on order? Out of you, how many of you wish you never bought it?
