I built a crypto data platform that measures volume instead of asking exchanges for it — here's the first 24h report

Most data sites publish self-reported volume: they ask exchanges how much traded, sum the answers, done. An exchange that wants to look busier can simply say it did. Coinmico works the other way. It connects to public trade feeds on 43 spot exchanges and decodes swaps on 19 chains, timestamps every trade, and builds its own candles, prices and 24h volume from that tape. Yesterday that came to $85.0B across 22,307 markets — with 1.7M on-chain swaps decoded. A few things that fell out of building it this way:

On the largest venues, our measured volume lands within a few percent of what they report. On smaller ones the gap can be several multiples — which is the whole reason to measure.

Spot CEX and DEX are combined (both are coins actually changing hands). Derivatives are kept separate: a perp can turn over all day without a single coin moving.

Tokenised stocks are excluded from crypto rankings and the price index — on some venues they're most of the daily turnover and would push a mid-sized exchange above the biggest ones. They get their own page instead.

Coverage is the trade-off: we only measure venues we connect to, so our totals sit below aggregators that accept reported numbers from a thousand exchanges. I'd rather publish a smaller number that traces back to observed trades.
