Research an opportunity

Hi, I'm casually into crypto and do not post here but I have a question I think is best suited for you guys on this sub.

I have been added to a group with an option to buy into a new coin, I trust the person that added me and know they have invested a relatively large sum to join and convinced it will take off. The group is apparently full of well known crypto whales with large following in social media.

My question: is there a good way for me to research this or is it just a case of taking a gamble?

I can see the website and pdf explaining what the coin will do but that doesn't really give me an idea of how it will go once released, I'm pretty sure the majority of these just do not materialise but I don't really have any experience with this sort of thing.
