The Cloud is not decentralized data. The Cloud is a proxy for centralized services managed by major organizations located far away, which you must rely on. The decentralized web is similar to BitTorrent or Napster. It is not operated by a single service, and you do not need to rely on a single party.

Although cloud computing has certain scalability benefits, decentralization is far more resilient. There isn't a single point of attack. Data saved on a Cloud service can be removed at any moment if any terms are violated. When you own your own data on the Decentralized Web, no one can take it away from you, neither the government nor anybody else. This is becoming an increasingly critical issue in many countries.

Almost every service we use saves our data and then costs us a price to get it. Many free applications do not feature an offline option, forcing users to share their data at all times, even if they would like to keep it private.

At some time, it will be cheaper and safer for each of us to function as our own personal servers, especially when it comes to our medical information, which is the most personal of all.
