I had a bit of a failed experiment with LN recently using abandoned software that doesn't install nicely on windows (Zap). Even after seeing a 'best LN wallets for 2023' article which included Zap.
I feel like I see a lot more LN wallets on mobile than desktop, why is this?
Do I need to just get a dedicated Linux based machine?
Also, unlike the on-chain stuff, it looks like setting up a node is mandatory(?). Is that correct? What is the purpose of this node (watchtower for peers posting expired contracts?), and is it essential?
And then finally, what do you recommend to set up some sample LN channels to make test payments on windows desktop?
