A Bitcoin node has a collection of functions: routing, the blockchain database, mining, and wallet services (Bitcoin Core Client software comes with all of the aforementioned functions). Not every node has the same functionalities, however ; All nodes validate and propagate transactions and blocks, and discover and maintain connections to peers.

A full node independently validates incoming transactions against the consensus rules, broadcasts valid transactions to other nodes in the network, and stores valid transactions in a local pool called mempool, until they are included in a candidate block by a miner. A full node also confirms incoming blocks, during which the hash and the contents of the block are checked and confirmed, before broadcasting the block to other nodes, and adding the block to its local copy of the blockchain.

Validated transactions are temporarily stored in a node’s mempool, where they wait to be picked up by a miner (how fast or slow this transaction gets picked up, depends on the height of the transaction fee set by the sender. The higher the fee, the faster the transaction gets picked) who then includes the transactions into a candidate block.

A candidate block is a temporary block created using transactions from the mempool.

A Simplified Payment Verification (SPV) Node validates transactions by relying on the work of its peers, since it only stores the block headers, and not the full blockchain, it can only confirm if a transaction is showing up on the blockchain, and if a full node has validated a transaction.

A block header serves as a summary for the rest of the block in question, it’s made up of metadata, such as : the time and difficulty when the block was mined, the merkle root of the included transactions, the nonce as well as the hash from the previous block.

A mining node is essentially a full node which is operated by an entity that runs a piece of mining software on the full node, and uses hardware (ASIC-computers) which are constantly hashing blocks in order to find a valid hash.
