BTC newbie: someone managed to get into my electrum wallet and empty it. How? and how to prevent?

I have been using bitcoin for many years, with this electrum account. The wallet file is located only on my local PC. The password is admittedly passwords I use elsewhere. But still, I don't understand how someone was able to access my electrum account so much so that they have not only my password, but my wallet file to access the wallet and make the transaction of all my funds out to some BTC deposit address. Seeing this came as a complete surprise as I thought access to the local wallet file on my PC was necessary to access the wallet (let alone also know my password). Am I missing something obvious? Am I right in saying this scammer must have had access to both that local wallet file and my password? I don't want to make the same mistake again with my brand new electrum wallet.

Windows Defender was disabled, firewall disabled, no recent use of the wallet, VPN enabled.

I ran like every security/malware app scan available, seemingly nothing. But perhaps access to a wallet like that is possible without direct access to the entirety of my PC file system?

Thanks!
